Smith Gardens "The Farm"

In 1925, W J (Bill) Smith started growing radishes and carrots on 25 acres in the Black Creek - Jane & Eglinton - area of Toronto. One of the earliest suppliers to grocers in the Toronto area, he even lent a hand setting up some of the very first self-serve produce departments with his customers.

Bill purchased a piece of today's Smith Gardens farm property in 1943, and began developing the entire site in 1947. A canal system was completed in 1951, but in 1954 Hurricane Hazel struck - right at harvest time - and destroyed all 400 acres. The Smith family struggled, renting land nearby to keep farming, until their fields were repaired and able to yield their next crop in 1963.

Along with a growing world appetite for Holland Marsh produce, the family business has since grown and prospered. Today a modern, world-class growing and packaging operation, we have over 850 acres in production, on-site cold storage,   packaging and shipping facilities.
